Ward was able to do to represent the way select things appeared in his book. As such, the viewer is invited to consider the sketches as helpful guidelines. Simply take what you see, imagine them in full color and looking much cooler and more detailed, and you will have a pretty good working facsimile of what the subjects ought to look like.
